GLENDALE, Ariz. — Most football players don't  make their first NFL career catch in the Super Bowl.  Most definitely don't score their first touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Most don't play like Chris Matthews of the Seattle Seahawks, and he did both of the above on Super Bowl Sunday, February 1, 2015.

Chris Matthews is a 25 year old first-year player from Kentucky.  His first claim to fame was recovering the onside kick in the NFC Championship game over the Green Bay Packers to help them advance to the Super Bowl.

Matthews had a heck of a game against the New England Patriots.  Without him, the Seahawks could have been shut out in the first half.

Matthews ended up with four catches for 109 yards.  The Seahawks were trailing 7-0, and it was late in the second quarter — when Matthews picked the time to come up with his first NFL reception.

He ran one on one with Patriots cornerback Kyle Arrington, leaped, reached back and pulled in Russell Wilson’s lob pass for a 44-yard gain to the New England Patriot's 11-yard line.  That lit up the Seahawks’ offense, leading to Marshawn Lynch’s 3-yard touchdown run.

Matthews struck again, this time with six seconds left in the first half.  Taking a risk by running a play rather than taking the chip-shot field goal, Pete Carroll had Kyle Wilson drill a pass to Matthews who absolutely over-powered the Patriots cornerback Logan Ryan and Chris Matthews scored his first NFL touchdown with only two seconds left.

In the third quarter, Matthews outplayed Arrington and spun on the left sideline for a 44-yard amazing catch.  This lead to a Steven Hauschka field goal to give the Seahawks a 17-14 lead

Matthews was quoted as saying, “It was great for me.  This is huge for me right now, just being able to finish the game and do what I did. I didn’t have a perfect game. Who knows? Maybe if I hadn’t messed up on a couple routes and been in the right place at the right time we probably would have had a whole different outcome.’’

We will surely see more of Chris Matthews in years to come!!!

A little background on Matthews:

- He spent time in the Arena Football League with the Iowa Barnstormers.
- He spent a couple of years in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
- He’s a very big target for any QB (6-foot-5, 218 lbs.).
- He was working at Foot Locker and had a second job as a security guard when he got the call from his agent that the Seahawks were interested and wanted to see him that night.  He told the Seahawks “I don’t get off work until nine, I don’t know if I’ll make it.’’ Matthew's agent called him and told him to get to Seattle immediately, and thankfully, Matthews did just that.

He spent time on and off the practice squad this season, was signed to the Seahawks' 53-man roster on December 6, 2014.  He appeared in three games, but did not have a catch.  He picked the best time to shine, in the NFL Super Bowl XLIX (49), the biggest game of his career with a worldwide audience and he wore his BelieveWristband from BelieveWristbands.com with pride!!!
